Anyone know any math teachers who want to come to NY?

Hey Fam! I don't even have email addresses saved anymore so I figure I'll post it here :)

Hello Team Collegiate --

Congratulations on nearing the finish line of the 2008-2009 school year! As you wind down, and we prepare to gear up, I am hoping that you might be able to help.

Uncommon Charter High School is still in search of a math teacher for the 2009-2010 school year. We would love to continue the tradition of powerful math instruction on the high school level, and we need someone who can dually create an Algebra and Geometry curriculum. If there is anyone you know who would be interested in founding a school and creating the foundation for the high school program, please send them to me (name and preferably resume) as soon as possible at mroth@uncommonhs.org. Even it’s a bit of a stretch, we’d love for you to reach out to relatives, friends, former colleagues, acquaintances, old flames, TFA alumni, etc. We need someone great to work with our Sabers!

More dance injuries?

Speaking of music and death, I know Peter and James are putting together wedding music, and I know they must select what they and the bride and groom like, and I know you probably should disregard this, but if Theresa and Jamie want more injuries on the dance floor consider some of the following:
Talking Heads
Marvin Gaye
Al Green and/or Barry White (for your Mom)
Aretha Franklin
Probably anything from the Commitments soundtrack
Bruce (Rosalita usually fills the floor)
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (if you want a ska cut [or use a selection from Peter N's band])
On the dreamy side, something from the Classics Four (for your Dad)
There is a energetic dance number from Southside Johnny called "I've been working too hard"

I could go on and on and offer specific titles, but I'll just open a can of worms by letting others list their favorite dance tunes.

The King of Pop is dead.

If you ever put the thriller album on and jumped around your room, or wore a fedora and did a nice hip thrust into a knee kick out. If you've ever stood in front of the student body at a highschool and did the smooth criminal dance. If you've ever made a reference to that 'really creepy thriller video about the couple at makeout lane' when parked on the top of a hill with your sweat heart and if you've ever loved the music of Michael Jackson, today is the day to mourn. For the King of Pop has died.

More on Health Care

Here are two interesting articles, Atul Gawande and Abraham Verghese on reducing health care costs so we can get Di back in the country. Thanks to kottke.org.

The Story of Diane Tucker

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof tells of the story of Diane Tucker, a lawyer who is now stranded in Canada because she cannot afford health insurance in America due to her history of stroke: This Time, We Won’t Scare.

You know, I think I feel a song coming on (Think MTA):

Now you people in the states,
Don't you think it's a scandal
How your health care's in such disarray.
Fight for health reform,
And for universal coverage!
Get Di Tucker back in the USA!

Five Months In

Obama pretty much gets it right in

(a) the Mideast (as per Hendrik Hertzberg): THE OBAMA EFFECT

(b) his response to the economic crisis (as per economist Nouriel Roubini AKA Dr. Doom, the one guy who foresaw the bursting of the housing bubble and the resulting economic collapse): Dr. Doom Has Some Good News

If we going into our favorite theories about running....

Beer after runs = good. I was talking to Uncle Bill about it, some spanish researchers.. yadda yadda yadda, can't find original article yadda yadda yadda, but you'll have to take my word for it as well as this back up article I found LINK

Comments? questions?

Better Running?

Here is the article I mentioned to Sean over the weekend: Better Running Through Walking.

So, you marathon runners, is walking really a better way or just a sad rationalization for being a wuss?

A phone that charges itself?!....wirelessly!

Seems a little too finicky for my liking LINK

Another Video

Another video. Inspired by the Highlander TV series. I hope you all enjoy.

By the way, Teddy and Megan's wedding was amazing! Made even more amazing by the pens winning the cup!

Anyway, here's my latest video:

21st Century Boston Tea party

To those of you following the bogus Iranian Election, the new Boston tea party.

The Iranian government has tried to block the internet used by protesters. In response, people around the world are providing proxies to allow Iranian protesters means to communicate with fellow countrymen and the world. Protesters are using youtube videos showing governmental violence and twitter, facebook etc. to setup rallies.

Fixing the Middle East

So much for the Middle East and Obama, maybe eight years from now we'll take another crack at fixing the region.

From Haaretz, an Israel newspaper,

A photo released by the White House, which shows Obama talking on the phone with Netanyahu on Monday, speaks volumes: The president is seen with his legs up on the table, his face stern and his fist clenched, as though he were dictating to Netanyahu: "Listen up and write 'Palestinian state' a hundred times. That's right, Palestine, with a P." As an enthusiast of Muslim culture, Obama surely knows there is no greater insult in the Middle East than pointing the soles of one's shoes at another person. Indeed, photos of other presidential phone calls depict Obama leaning on his desk, with his feet on the floor.

Bush's Legacy Lives On

Bush may or may not be the worst president ever (maybe bottom five) but he will certainly go down as one of the worst major business men ever.

just wondering

I want to know whose bright idea it was to schedule a wedding during Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Short new video

I know this will make Sean happy, but I managed to make a new very short video for YouTube. I hope you all enjoy it!

Omaha Beach

Pretty harrowing and detailed account of the landing on Omaha beach.  Originally published in 1960.

Obama's Speech in Cairo

A must read. Atlantic correspondent Robert Kaplan calls it magnificent, and it is. Here's the text.

The Pirates Being the Best Minor League Farm Team in the Majors

Hey Guys,

Not trying to kill the religion topic with a topic about sports, but if anyone hasn't heard Pirates traded Nate McLouth (possibly the Pirates best player) to the Atlanta Braves for 3 minor league prospects. I also heard that the money saved from having to pay McLouth will go to another firework show. I think the organization might as well buy the players lawn chairs and kegs so that the players sitting around drinking beers and watching the fireworks. Even the Pirate players can't afford the beer at the stadium with their salaries. The Pirates are starting their moves a little early this year (must be the economy). At least last year they managed to wait to trade away all of their good players until after the All Star break.

Chances of the Pirates getting to 500 - 0.00001%...all the other players would have to drop dead from steroids
