The best of 2008 movie lists are in. The Movie City News is still in the process of compiling its summary of critics' top ten movie lists, and here's where it stands so far:

Gah! It is a real chore getting through 'The Flight of the Red Balloon". If you can make it, there are some intellectual rewards, but it is a real stretch to pull it onto a list of the best films of the year, let alone top the list.
"Paranoid Park" was also tough to get through. Gus Van Sant decided to film a bunch gratuitous 10-minute-long slow-motion skateboarding scenes and stick them in the movie.
I strongly recommend the documentary "Bigger, Faster, Stronger". It's about steroid use in America.
"The Wrestler" is supposed to be amazing.
I really want to see The Wrestler (and I think maybe Rachel at the Wedding). Milk was fantastic, although I normally don't enjoy biopics. I have heard nothing but great things about Slum Dog Millionaire. Wall-E was excellent. Benjamin Button was very well acted, although if they had cut it down about an hour (it ran at over 3hrs) I think it would have been more powerful.
Cloverfield should of been on the lists
The Wrestler is also on my list of to-be-seen. Slumdog let me down. I don't want to say too much here as I don't want to give anything away. If anyone wants to argue, we can start another thread.
Cloverfield was so underrated. Great movie.
I saw "Man on Wire" tonight thinking it would be a nice, well done documentary. It is much more than that.
I saw Mike Leigh's Happy Go Lucky. It doesn't pack the emotional wallop of some of his other movies like "Secrets and Lies" or "Vera Drake," but it's still pretty good. I think that the main character, Poppy, is sort of a Rorschach test for the audience. How you react to her speaks volumes about you. Ellen loved her.
