Peter, Paul and Mary was the brainchild of Albert Grossman (who also managed Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band and Paul Butterfield). He claimed he wanted a folk "supergroup" with "a tall blonde (Travers), a funny guy (Stookey) and a good looking guy (Yarrow)."
Their recording and touring years fell smack dab in the middle of my childhood and adolescence (1961-1970). We had just about all their albums and I spent a lot of time listening to their music. In high school, I made it to one of their concerts -- at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh.
They were definitely part of the sound track to the civil rights and anti-war movement.
This may well be a made-up memory, but I have a distinct recollection of constant bickering between Mom and Bill on the merits of PP&M. Bill claimed the group was the greatest thing since sliced bread; Mom was having none of it. I also have a memory of Bill spending an eternity working on the guitar fingering for "Early Mornin' Rain."
