So Why Be So Hard on Vermont

In August 2011, Michele Bachman said Hurricane Irene was God's warning to curb excessive government spending. --News reports

We know that God's an all-powerful God
God's actions are not nonchalant.
We know he can punish whomever he wants.
So why be so hard on Vermont?

Yes, spending increases our deficit -- sure
Vermont, though, has not been avant
The rest of the country. We all spend a lot.
So why be so hard on Vermont?

Its mountains? Its hipsters? Its accent? Or what
Might tick off the Great Commandant?
We know we're all sinners; we spend and we spend.
So why be so hard on Vermont?

--Calvin Trillin

We know that Vermont drew The Almighty's gaze.
His actions are swift and they're tough.
But who can divine God's inscrutable ways,
Perhaps they didn't quite spend enough.

I think you've given Trillin something to think about. The next thing you know, you'll be writing poetry for The Nation

By the muse, I don't want to be glam
Or a boasting, beguiling enamorer
But if I can't beat Trillin in a poetry slam,
I'd turn in my iambic tetrameter.
