Blog Traffic Summary

Didn't have a 2nd Anniversary Post on Dec 1, 2010. So here are the stats-  The viewership is consistent,  the last 14 months had returning viewers averaging 400 a month, an increase from the first 15 months which averaged 248 a month.  So good job.  Still trying to get find the best way to automate family picture uploads.

A few questions. What are "Page Loads" and "Unique Visitors?" (I like to think of myself as fairly unique.)

Also, I understand why the numbers go down right after December -- I suppose that it's the post-holiday blues. But why do our number peak in the months beginning in "A"? (April and August)

I'd be interested in exactly what the figures represent also. For example, how would these visits be categorized?

1. I visit the site on the first of the month in the morning.
2. I visit the site later that day.
3. I look at 3 different articles.
4. I visit the site the next day.
5. I write an article and edit it 4 or 5 times.
6. As I'm making a post, I open another tab on my browser to check what someone wrote in another post.

Don't worry Myk you are a Unique Viewer...the algorithm for unique viewer is pretty complex but to the layman it is the # of first time viewers plus # of returning visitors. First time visitors are based on users lacking cookies for this site. If your web browser does not maintain cookies (which will result in a slower internet experience) the counter will determine uniqueness by recurring IP addresses. Obviously, dynamic IP addresses and no cookies will result in certain visitors being labeled as first timers. The first time you visit the site you get a cookie, the cookie alerts the blog next time you visit you are not a first timer.

Page loads, the amount of times the main page is loaded. It is rare since comments are pop-ups and posts are on the main page.

Jim
1. 1 return viewer count
2. If it is an hour or more after your first visit 1 return viewer count
3. No change, unless you continual refresh for increase in page loads
4. 1 return viewer count for that day
5. No change, unless you close webpage wait more than an hour return to webpage to resume editing
6. No change

To increase viewership obviously have great posts but hotlink in social sites, twitter facebook etc so friends have easy access (and know the site exists). Also, the more articles written on a wide range of topics increase the chance someone googling something will come across the blog by happenstance. Hopefully they enjoy what they read. Finally, to engage Harveys, I think more family oriented stuff, photos, events details, recipes etc.

I hope some harveys are looking at this from time to time, if not, C'est la vie, but for my self I have read some interesting articles, forces me to type and think, heard new music/videos, kept in conversational contact with a few family members and now 2 and half years later the site is a little bit of a Harvey bent historical archive. All stuff that isn't gauged by viewership.

Thank you, Pete. I'm somewhat amazed at both the sophistication of the statistics and, consequently, the amount of traffic. Of course, I have nothing with which to compare. Joe, if your out there, how does your web site fare in regards to traffic?

One last question, is there a measure for length of visit?

For length of visit Yes, however it has more logistical holes.
