Very unfortunate. He was supposed to be in LA last month for a reading of his memoir (I highly recommend it of course), but ended up cancelling the tour to begin chemo.
Don't know much about esophageal cancer, but from what I've heard it's a bad one.
Just don't tell him, as knowledge of intercessory prayers is detrimental to a patient, "patients who knew they were being prayed for had a higher rate of post-operative complications like abnormal heart rhythms, perhaps because of the expectations the prayers created"

I always liked how cs lewis put it about prayer: "It doesn't change God- it changes me."
