I thought we had long ago accounted for the Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx through an understanding of both the human mind's need to see patterns in things and the universal phenomenon of Regression to the Mean.
But, now days within his appearance on the cover of SI, Grilli has been placed on the disabled list. The Pirates are calling the injury a right forearm strain, but sports writers suspect something more serious.
As if in compensation for the Pirates' loss of Grilli, God has restored the health of second baseman Neil Walker, who had been on the disabled list since July 7.
By the way, Grilli is the first Pirate to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated in 21 years.
