One of my professors at UMass helped to develop this app. I thought it was a pretty cool (and hopefully effective) way for people to help in some way in the Gulf: http://savegulfwildlife.org/
That is quite cool. It makes me think of the incredible possibilities made available by instant communication and knowledge transfer with huge populations which is just becoming possible for the first time in history.
I think of it as the next step from projects like SETI and Folding.
