This movie reality is best explained by the Many-worlds interpretation, a realist, deterministic, local explanation of quantum mechanics. Personally my favorite because a reality with an infinite number of Peters would be bitchin.
I'm surprised there aren't more movies exploiting the weirdness of quantum physics. It's such fertile territory with so many interpretations and, if done reasonably (with a physicist consultant), critics would have a hard time blasting it for being farfetched. Granted, no Hollywood picture would ever get the physics right, but it might get people thinking about the subject.
[I have no idea what part of physics the TV show Quantum Leap represented.]
