I like Neil deGrasse Tyson and the idea that we are made up of the original atoms of the Big Bang. (He must have like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young when he was young.) But, just to play devil's advocate—or more like imp's advocate—what else would we be made up of? From where else would we come? It would be even more astounding if our atoms came from somewhere else.
What I find "most astounding" is my reaction to the music that plays along with the video.
I love the question, "What is the most astounding fact you can share with us about the universe?" I would love to see how others answer this.
My first thought was the illogical nature of how the nano universe behaves, but I think the spirit of the question is with astronomy. Black holes are pretty astounding to me, but I guess my answer would be this. We know the universe (i.e. everything that exists) is expanding. Most astounding for me is the concept of what it is expanding into—it's not part of the universe.
What do others find as "the most astounding fact about the universe"?
I find very original Tyson's idea that looking at the universe doesn't doesn't make him feel small; it makes him feel big. He goes on to say that we are not only in the universe but the universe is in us; a little like saying I am in the Father, and the Father in me.
"concept of what it is expanding into—it's not part of the universe". That can occur only if the universe is finite and has a boundary since you can't add to infinity. There has so far been no evidence of a boundary so if on the otherhand there is no boundary and its infinite, the universe isn't expanding into anything. If you picture the universe in 2-d such as the surface of the balloon with dots representing the galaxies and the rubber surface as space-time itself, the "expansion" is the actually stretching of the rubber. So the dots (the galaxies) do not move just the rubber between them gets stretched. The surface of the balloon is infinite in that space-time is curve in onto itself. Travel from one dot on the surface of the balloon you would never reach an end because you would curve around till you reached your starting point. Thus it is not expansion into something but stretching of timespace itself.
